Online Schools As a Career Path

As one gains proficiency in processing the data and applies this to an online school, she may wish to add to the number of courses he is teaching. For example, suppose that an instructor wants to add to her income. She can do this by adding to her load, and she does not have to restrict her choices to the same school. She can select a number of them. There are instructors who earn as much as 0,000 per year. The average income is half of this amount. This would be next to impossible in an on-the-ground curriculum organization. One would be blocked by time and space restraints. Imagine taking on four courses, each a different school, and having to fight traffic and red lights to get from one to another. All this if one could schedule the courses at different times at the outset. But in an online set up this is possible. In an online system one can easily take on four or more courses at the same school and an unlimited number of courses if one teaches for several schools. This is made possible via the internet. One is not teaching in physical space and time, but in cyberspace and asynchronous time.

As a result of this modality, the instructor can, if she wants, schedule as many courses as she can bear. This means much more money. Also, consider that the typical on the ground curriculum organization takes place in sixteen weeks and the online scheduling is limited to seven and a half weeks, one doubles one’s income per unit time. It is therefore clear that the online path is the most lucrative career path. Many universities are gradually shifting to the online system for their basic algebra and beginning composition course work. They are using what they call a blended approach to curriculum, the student being given a choice of taking the courses on line or on the ground. This saves a lot of money for the college, for they have to hire fewer teachers. But for their instructor the news is good too, for there are progressively more colleges going over to the online system. Distance is no problem. One can live in New Hampshire and teach a course in Los Angeles. Or, one can teach a class in Montana while lying on the beach in the Bahamas.

Gradually, the on ground configuration is losing ground and more instructors are learning of the proficiency of the internet connection. And for those who are unfamiliar with internet instruction, they need not worry. All such programs require the applicant to go through training to learning to navigate the platform of their respective version of online teaching. The for profit online schools such as Argosy University, Kaplan, Phoenix, ITT Technical Institute all have slightly different versions of how to operate their system. The applicants need only to apply what they are taught in the training sessions. Janine had been teaching three courses on the ground for a small community college in Chicago. She was tired of fighting traffic and red lights and tired of being underpaid. She had heard about online teaching and she was intrigued. So the first thing she was advised to do was to update her CV. She did so, stressing any online work she had ever done. Then she e-mailed batches of CVs-ten to fifteen at a time to colleges across the United States. She obtained a list of hundreds of colleges that carried online courses and used it as a guide.

Such lists are available from Human Resources in many colleges such as the University of Texas. Janine was contacted by phone and an interview was set for her. She completed the interview which focused on basic questions about experience and philosophy of education. Then she was assigned a mentor who would guide her through teaching the first few classes. After Janine had taught two or three classes she began to feel comfortable with the system and did not need to rely so much on her mentor. Yet, the mentor was always available. Janine enjoyed not having to drive through traffic to make her classes. She enjoyed being able to travel anywhere and still teach her classes as long as she carried her trusty laptop. She began to spread the word. Online teaching was a winner-a winner in financial rewards and in work conditions.

Online adjunct teaching has several advantages over the traditional on the ground teaching for all educators with earned graduate degrees and a willingness to master the computer skills required to interact with online degree programs. More courses can be scheduled and the ease of teaching is enhanced by distance education technology. Therefore, more money can be earned per unit of time expended. This is why online adjunct college teaching jobs are increasing every semester. There is every indication that online adjunct job openings will continue to increase far into the future.
